About the Department
The Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality (CSGS) at the
University of Chicago promotes original research in gender and
sexuality. The 200+ affiliates of the Center work in a wide variety of
disciplines, time periods, and geographies. The CSGS supports the
research objectives and initiatives of students at all levels and
faculty of all appointment @types; it has a robust curricular element
including an undergraduate major/minor, a core sequence, and a graduate
certificate; our programming includes annual lectures, events that
respond to current issues related to gender and sexuality,
faculty-designed programs, conferences, book talks, film series, and
exhibits. The Center provides space to residential dissertation fellows
and affords teaching opportunities for teaching fellows. It also hosts
interdisciplinary forums and public programming and participates in
outreach to university and community partners.
Job Summary
The job provides professional support and solves straightforward
problems for a broad range of business operations and academic
activities. May develop and implement office procedures and policies and
ensures compliance. May prepare and monitor the budget for a unit.
Beyond the core duties of ensuring the effective and efficient operation
of the CSGS, the Associate Director plays a central role in development
and long-term strategic planning, supporting the ongoing vitality of the
Center\'s contributions to scholarship, campus life, and a broad
community. The Associate Director, working closely with the Faculty
Director, develops programmatic and strategic goals for the Center, and
should have the creativity and resourcefulness to pursue new directions
and opportunities. The Associate Director serves as the principal
liaison to other administrative units of the University. The Associate
Director must maintain familiarity with the research projects of
CSGS-affiliated faculty and postdoctoral fellows to design informed
programming.
Responsibilities
Maintain familiarity and build relationships with faculty of all
appointment @types working on gender and sexuality.
Work with the Faculty Director, Governing Board, and faculty project
directors on design and implementation of research and programming
initiatives.
Assist the Faculty Director with faculty development, including new
faculty affiliations, outreach to departments and centers, hosting of
information sessions, organization of junior faculty write-in, design
and implementation of faculty projects, and other faculty support.
In collaboration with the Faculty Director, plan and ensure successful
execution of all annual lectures and events, and multi-year projects and
long-term plans.
Foster community among residential dissertation fellows.
Provide support to Governing Board and ensure follow through related to
Board\'s work.
Manage and respond to requests for co-sponsorship; communicate with
faculty to ensure shared understanding of funding and time allocations;
develop event budgets and track expenses.
Respond to all queries in a timely manner.
Manage the annual call for proposals, work with faculty to design and
clarify requests for funding, organize selection process, respond to all
requests, and track projects/events.
Monitor organizational structures, processes, and systems for efficient
administration of Center operations.
Provide leadership in developing short and long-term strategic and
programmatic goals for the Center in cooperation with Faculty Director,
Governing Board, and other Center staff.
Develop, manage, and forecast CSGS budget and maintain relationship with
SSD LBC business managers; process expense report submissions, initiate
and coordinate payroll and financial transactions with the SSD business
center, including student payroll, travel, reimbursements, and purchases
Hire and supervise student workers.
Perform routine and complex assignments for the unit in the areas of
finance, event planning or support services.
Develop funding and spending priorities with the Faculty Director and
administer the Center\'s budgets and endowment accounts.
Establish and manage budget lines for operations and infrastructure,
curriculum, faculty and student research, programming, and other Center
costs, and maintain oversight of all Center accounts.
Prepare financial and other reports for the Faculty Director, Governing
Board, SSD Dean, the College, and others as needed.
Assist the Faculty Director in producing the Center\'s annual report and
other reports as needed.
Develop and maintain relationships with other university departments,
centers and institutes.
Foster connections and collaborations with professional associations,
comparable centers, community organizations, and professional
organizations related to gender and sexuality.
