DSS Campus Safety
About the Department
The Campus Safety Division of the Department of Safety and Security is
responsible for the following areas: Security and Law Enforcement
Systems, Security Services and security for the University of Chicago
Charter School campuses and the University of Chicago Laboratory
Schools. The Campus Safety Division also oversees the University Safety
Ambassador Program.
Job Summary
This role leads operational support work in maintaining a safe and
secure environment for the assigned University area or facility. Works
autonomously within established procedures to inspect public areas of
the medical environment for fire and safety hazards. The CSO II role
performs checks of incoming personnel and visitors after hours in
addition to enforcing the photo ID policy and parcel inspection policy
along with all other University and Laboratory and Charter School
policies.
Responsibilities
Reports violations of federal, state, and local criminal laws and
ordinances and assists school officials with the administration of
education and administrative regulations regarding student conduct.
Deters criminal activity and supports community standards by fostering
professional relationships with students and school staff.
Patrols campus area on foot, checking for fires, vandalism, suspicious
activity or persons, safety/fire hazards, and reports circumstances to
the appropriate unit for correction or follow-up actions.
Provides guidance and support to a team of Community Service Officers
responsible for the safety and security function at the Laboratory and
Charter School campuses.
Investigates and reports hazards and unusual or suspicious circumstances
to University of Chicago Charter School leadership at each campus, as
well as to the University of Chicago Police for correction or follow-up
actions; maintain contact with campus police.
Acts as a liaison between school personnel and students.
Reports criminal activity committed on or adjacent to school property.
Receives training in Crisis Intervention and De-Escalation and utilizes
these skills as appropriate.
Assists school administration and faculty in formulating safety and
violence prevention programs, including participation in the formulation
of Annual Emergency Management Plans, Lockdown Plans, and other similar
procedures; and including participation in any Campus Committees
concerning safety and security issues, including identifying training
needs for security and other personnel on an ongoing basis.
Participates in security-related meetings as requested.
Participates in and provides security for campus activities, student
organizations, and athletic events when invited and feasible.
Assists any persons in the building or on campus grounds needing
direction or campus information.
Escorts people/property to the desired destination when money,
documents, or safety of property or persons is a concern.
Responds to alarms and requests for service; decides what actions to
take based on the situation, facts known, and position limitations.
Decides when an incident requires a written report; decides which report
form to use and submits to supervisor; may prepare other written reports
as directed by supervisor.
Assists with community services, training, and other areas as assigned.
Responds to non-hazardous, non-emergency, and other calls for service
instead of a police officer, such as lost property, requests for safety
escorts, building close procedures, and motorist assistance. Writes
reports documenting calls for service and prepares other written
correspondence.
Provides traffic control as necessary, including school
arrival/dismissal periods, special events, and unusual occurrences.
Provides information and assistance to the general public; answers
citizen inquiries and responds to complaints and requests for services.
Provides information to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Provides support with administrative functions in support of the
Department and assists with projects as needed.
Maintains various logs and records; gathers information and prepares
routine reports as assigned.
Inputs and retrieves a variety of information using a computer.
Provides safety presentations to the Laboratory and Charter School
communities.
Openly supports the mission and vision of the Department of Safety and
Security.
Assists students, faculty, staff, and visitors whenever needed and works
to maintain a safe and secure environment for the entire School
Community.
Patrols campuses on foot and inspects hallways, stairways, and all other
public areas for fire/safety hazards. Reports any unusual condition or
malfunctioning equipment.
Routinely provides escort service upon request.
Attends court or other legal proceedings to provide details of specific
incidents when required.
