Job Information
Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
This is an executive position (no union affiliation) and serves at the pleasure of the Mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage.
DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Fire Department (AFD)
HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week based on 5/8, 4/10, or 9/80 schedule based on supervisor approval.
LOCATION: 1301 E 80th

Example of Duties
The Wildfire Specialist (WS) will provide task level monitoring, and performance monitoring within the Wildfire Mitigation Program. Responsible for support of the Wildfire Mitigation Office and Wildfire Mitigation Officer (WMO). Primary administrator within the Incident Qualifications System (IQS) responsible for monitoring and entering qualifications for members within the Anchorage Fire Department. Maintain and update GIS mapping and data related to the Wildfire Management Program. In support of the WMO, facilitate, monitor and support wildfire education, prevention, and risk reduction programs within the department and to the public. Assist with fuel management planning, fuels reduction programs, and assist the WMO with compliance with grant requirements and program objectives. Provide technical expertise at wildfire incidents to incident command by supporting fire behavior assessments, operational decisions, and safety. Perform other required duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and six (6) years of experience specific to the position.
OR
Associate's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, Accounting or a similar discipline and four (4) years of experience specific to the position.
OR
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, Accounting or a similar discipline and two (2) years of experience specific to the position.
OR
Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, Accounting or a similar discipline and experience specific to the position.
All applicants must possess or obtain:
Valid State of Alaska Driver's License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
Preferences:
National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Red Card Certification.
Wildfire fuel mitigation program and incident response experience.
NWCG Task Book management experience.
Proficiency in using Incident Qualification System (IQS) or IQCS for firefighter certification tracking.

Appointment to this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska driver's license and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska driver's license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
Military Service Interview Preference :
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual's command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
