What is a ServiceNow CMDB & Discovery Analyst?
The ServiceNow CMDB & Discovery Analyst plays a critical role in the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of the organization's Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and ServiceNow Discovery capabilities. This role ensures accurate, up-to-date configuration data and effective integration of authoritative data sources to support IT Service Management (ITSM) and IT Operations Management (ITOM) processes. The analyst will work closely with IT and business stakeholders to maintain data integrity and enhance the visibility and relationships of Configuration Items (CIs). Collaboration is key, as this role partners with teams across Information Security, Analytics & Reporting, IT Service Management, Governance Risk & Compliance, Cloud/ Infrastructure/ Application Management, and Enterprise Architecture to drive continuous improvement and deliver high-quality IT services. This position is pivotal in ensuring the CMDB effectively supports IT service management processes, enabling better decision making, risk management, and operational efficiency across the organization.
What does a ServiceNow CMDB & Discovery Analyst do?
Designs, develops, and implements a scalable CMDB & CSDM framework tailored to Central Hudson's needs
Oversees the population and maintenance of the CMDB, ensuring all IT assets, configuration items (CIs), and their relationships remain accurate and up-to-date
Develops and maintains interactive dashboards and reports that provide real-time insights into CMDB health, utilization, and compliance
Implements and enforces change control processes to manage modifications to CIs while maintaining CMDB integrity
Eliminates stale, orphaned, and duplicate CIs through structured governance and technical processes
Defines and maintains standardized CI naming conventions to ensure consistency and clarity across the organization
Configures and optimize ServiceNow Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE) rules, ACLs, business rules, integrations, discovery schedules, and credentials
Implements automated processes for regular data updates, validation, and reconciliation to maintain high data accuracy and consistency
Establishes and maintains logical CI relationships to accurately reflect dependencies across IT services, applications, and infrastructure
Integrates CMDB with authoritative data sources such as ServiceNow Discovery, SCCM, Intune, Tenable, and other IT management tools to enrich data and improve visibility
Monitors and optimizes ServiceNow Discovery tools to ensure effective CI population and improve asset tracking
Collaborates with ITOM, ITSM, and product owners to validate correct relationships between CIs and enhance cross-functional alignment
Develops, documents, and enforces policies for CMDB governance, ensuring compliance with organizational standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices
Conducts audits and assessments to validate CMDB data accuracy, working with IT teams to identify and resolve discrepancies
Works with stakeholders to improve software and hardware license management, ensuring the CMDB contains reliable data for cost and compliance tracking
Develops and implements a strategic roadmap to evolve the CMDB into a service-aware database, enabling data-driven decision-making and operational efficiencies
Monitors CMDB performance and analyze usage metrics to identify and address areas for improvement
Provides training and mentorship to IT staff and stakeholders, ensuring alignment with CMDB best practices and governance policies
Documents integration workflows, including data mappings, transformation logic, system interactions, and custom configurations, to improve system maintainability and knowledge sharing
Provides support for storm restoration efforts
What does it take to be a ServiceNow CMDB & Discovery Analyst?
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, STEM, Business, Communications or a relevant field and experience with CMDB Management. In lieu of a bachelors degree, an associate's degree in the aforementioned fields with 3+ years of CMDB Management experience or a high school diploma or equivalent with 5+ years of experience in CMDB Management will be considered.
Familiarity with ServiceNow CSDM and IT use-case design patterns
Proven experience in configuration management and CMDB administration
In-depth knowledge of CMDB concepts, methodologies, and best practices
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration across teams and organizational levels
Valid driver's license
Preferred:
ITIL certification
Certified ServiceNow Administrator
Additional ServiceNow certifications, including Micro-certs
Experience with Vulnerability Management
Experience leading CMDB implementation projects and driving process improvements
