Job Summary
This position is for a Principal Engineer Role in the Substation Standards Department in AEP. This department is responsible for the creation and maintenance of Substation Standards supporting designs from 12kV through 765kV. This position will mainly be responsible for providing technical support to production engineering, construction and field services departments on any assigned engineering/design topics.

Technical Expertise : Exhibits advanced level proficiency plus advanced knowledge of a specialized technical area that enables the engineer to serve as a resource for the company in an area such as system production, underground systems, extensive control systems, thermo-hydraulic control systems, distribution standards, fossil or nuclear plant operations,etc.

Leads, facilitates and coordinates work activities of others within work group, team, department, corporate entity, or those external to the company and assumes the role of project or function manager for assigned tasks.

Problem Solving & Initiative : Identifies, clarifies, resolves, and initiates solutions to complex problems that require multi-functional, or organizational, interfacing and/or multi-disciplined analytical techniques. Develops opportunities and new ideas and approaches that have system-wide impact.
Communication : Leads in the preparation and presentation of complex technical subjects, clearly, concisely, and persuasively, bringing in ancillary issues before senior management, professional organizations, regulatory bodies, etc. Projects credibility and competence on technical issues and has highly developed presentation skills.
Interpersonal Skills : Builds teams and networks that extend through AEP, and other companies, professional organizations, regulatory agencies, and academia. Networks throughout AEP, other companies, professional organizations, and regulatory agencies.

Additional details and major responsibilities listed below:
Responsible to the assigned supervisor for performing advanced level engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.
Provide engineering support for the creation and maintenance of Substation Standards Drawings including but not limited to Electrical Plans, Electrical Details, One Line Diagrams, Engineering Notes, etc. This will require communication and collaboration with cross departmental stakeholders and the need to provide guidance to the designers responsible for the CAD work and ensuring the design considerations and project schedules are met.
Possesses advanced knowledge and performs varied assignments with proficiency in the application of theory and analytical techniques to solve diverse problems and complete analyses. Technical responsibilities will be assigned based on the candidate's experience/background, skills or department needs. Major areas could include topics such as grounding, lightning/shielding, electrical connections, station service, Insulation coordination, Fuses, Conductor Ampacity, etc.
The successful candidate must be knowledgeable in the general application of the following in substation design practices (performed by others): protective relay schemes and controls; structural and foundation installations and station construction, operation and maintenance performance concerns. Familiarity with the NEC, NESC and the ability to research its requirements is desirable and requires some application.
Work with personnel in multiple departments in order to determine support needs, resolve issues and develop the effective solutions taking into consideration cost, schedule, constructability, and operations and maintenance requirements.
Participate and lead meetings as required. Perform site visits to substations sites as needed to support existing or new projects or initiatives. System travel expected (
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Engineer Prin( Grade 9- $112,869- $146,730 )
Has typically acquired 8 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*;
6 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*.
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico* is required for this position unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP.ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
Acceptable alternative is:
(1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.** Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.
Highly preferred Skills:
PE License highly required.
Knowledge of EHV (preferred 765kV/500kV) Transmission design, construction and maintenance
Project experience involving EHV (preferred 765kV/500kV) Transmission with design or standards
Knowledge of regulatory compliance and safety standards for EHV (preferred 765kV/500kV) Transmission
Civil, Structural, or Mechanical engineering degrees are required.
