Job Summary
BERS is seeking an experienced accountant for a Temporary staff position.
The Board of Education Retirement System (BERS) is one of five public pension systems in New York City. Founded in 1921, we proudly serve over 55,000 members. BERS provides retirement, death, disability, and survivor benefits for employees of the New York City Department of Education other than appointed teachers, employees of the School Construction Authority, and certain other classes of employees. The rate of pay is $35-$40/per hour for approximately 40 hours per week.
Responsibilities under supervision include, but are not limited to the following:
· Assists with the day-to-day operations within the department.
· Verifies data from received from various sources, analyze them for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with BERS Rules and Regulations, IRS rules and GASB pronouncements
· Prepare journal entries.
· Reconciles the sub-ledgers to the General Ledger.
· Assist with the month-end and year-end closing procedures.
· Prepare accounting schedules and reports.
· Assists in the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, State of New York Insurance report, and other reports requested by management.
· Assists in updating the accounting Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
· Perform other accounting tasks as directed by the Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in accounting, including one course in each of the following: advanced accounting, auditing, and cost accounting and one of the following:
a. one year of full‐time satisfactory experience in accounting or
b. a master’s degree in accounting.
- A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to ʺ1ʺ
Preferred:
- Certified Public Accountant or a master’s degree in accounting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and advanced functions such as Pivot Tables and Data Analysis Tools.
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Displays teamwork, integrity, and critical thinking.
This position will have a hybrid option after the initial onboarding period of 4 - 6 weeks.
