Job Overview
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) functions as a member of the patient care team, under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), and proficiently and consistently performs all aspects of the PCT role. The PCT primary resbonsibility will be assisting in the OR with turnovers and equipment needs. The PCT secondary role will be supporting the RN with clinical tasks including but not limited to obtaining vital signs, assisting with admission and discharge from the PACU and for responding to the needs of patients and family members. The PCT takes an active role in the efficient operation of the unit and works collaboratively with the other PCTs in the department. Orthopedics.
Duties
1. Visibility within the clinical area is essential throughout the day, with the exception of breaks and lunches. Breaks and lunches will be coordinated and communicated to the charge nurse prior to taking them.
2. Utilizing effective communication skills, the PCT will communicate with patients, significant others, healthcare team members, and center guests in a courteous and professional manner. Introduces self to patients and/or family members..
3. Takes initiative in the pre-operative and post-operative areas by assisting with:
a. vital signs (patient weights upon arrival, connecting to monitors, temp, urine pregnancy testing, assisting with gowning, etc)
b. Patient management throughout their stay
i. Provides appropriate nourishment for patients in PACU after consulting with the RN.
ii. Anticipates needs of patients dependent on the procedure performed (i.e. wet wash cloth, wheelchair, etc)
iii. Takes control of patient belongings prior to surgery and insures belongings are secured appropriately to maintain confidentiality and security of property. Retrieves patients’ belongings and delivers to correct PACU bay in a timely manner to maintain patient flow within PACU.
iv. Bringing patient family in after the procedure if nurse has approved
c. Patient movement in and out of the facility
i. Bringing patients in from the reception area when registration is complete
ii. Obtaining wheelchair for discharging of patients
iii. Wheeling patient out to their car.
d. Cleaning and turn-over of patient bays after patient discharge:
i. Removing old sheets
ii. Wiping down all patient touch items (stretcher, stretcher handles, monitor wires, bedside tables) with the facility approved wipes.
iii. Remaking of bays with new linen
e. Trash / Biohazardous waste removal
i. Removal of trash when full and/or at the end of the shift.
ii. Continual surveillance of sharps containers to ensure they are below the full line. Removal of full containers and replacement with new one.
f. Inventory management
i. Maintains adequate supply inventory.
ii. Maintain adequate linen stock throughout the day and end of day
iii. All storage areas should be kept neat and orderly
iv. Restocking of refrigerator and patient nourishment area
v. Daily restocking of each pre/post operative bay with emergency supplies as per the WSC checklist.
Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent required
2. Demonstrates interpersonal communication skills required to facilitate effective interaction with a variety of healthcare professionals.
3. Ability to work minimal supervision and organize work in order of importance.
