The Construction Trainer of YouthBuild Long Island is responsible for teaching and training cutting-edge construction practices to opportunity youth ages 18-24 related to energy efficiency,
renewable energy, and recycled materials. Also, responsible for maintaining safe worksite practices, providing direct instruction and work-based learning supervision, maintaining cohesive
program implementation, and providing training and leadership development opportunities. The Construction Trainer works closely with general contractors, and sub-contractors to assist in
project completion provide supportive guidance and encourages the development of personal and leadership skills of all participants.
Responsibilities:
Participate in the development of project-based curriculum that includes construction.
Assist in the teaching of construction skills including demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, finish carpentry, sheet metal, electrical, plumbing, painting, and masonry.
Assist in the implementation of the Multi Craft Curriculum and/or NCCER to train and certify program participants.
Teach cutting-edge construction practices related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, and recycled materials.
Guide participants through real-world construction tasks, ensuring they gain practical experience and build confidence in their skills.
Teach safety procedures for use and handling of equipment, tools and clean up through demonstrations, modeling appropriate procedures and supervising.
Teach appropriate ways to handle technical construction problems arising at the worksite.
Keep YouthBuild team informed about issues and needs of the participants.
Trainer will be responsible for participant oversight in the field and interface with housing department, subcontractors and inspectors.
Observe and evaluate participants at the worksite; provide hands-on assistance in training at the worksite.
Assist with testing and evaluation of student skills with the YouthBuild Team and provide regular assessments of student performance.
Document student skill attainment in coordination with the YouthBuild team.
Assist in informal personal and vocational counseling and development of participants leadership skills in conjunction with other staff members.
Enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students.
Use computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
Assist in personal and vocational counseling and development of trainees leadership skills
in conjunction with other YouthBuild staff.
Keep track of all tools and equipment used on a daily basis.
Implement attendance policies and procedures consistently.
Provide classroom and administrative support, as needed.
Serve as an additional on-site safety coordinator and as a mentor to YouthBuild
participants.
Attend regularly, United Way and YouthBuild staff meetings, alumni activities, and other
events as needed.
